In our journey through the divine names of God, we've already explored 𝘑𝘦𝘩𝘰𝘷𝘢𝘩-𝘉𝘰𝘳𝘦—𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘓𝘰𝘳𝘥 𝘰𝘶𝘳 𝘊𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘵𝘰𝘳, and 𝘑𝘦𝘩𝘰𝘷𝘢𝘩-𝘑𝘪𝘳𝘦𝘩—𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘓𝘰𝘳𝘥 𝘰𝘶𝘳 𝘗𝘳𝘰𝘷𝘪𝘥𝘦𝘳. Today, we continue with a name that offers deep comfort and assurance: 𝘑𝘦𝘩𝘰𝘷𝘢𝘩-𝘚𝘩𝘢𝘭𝘰𝘮. This name reveals God's nature as the source of our peace, a peace that surpasses all understanding and guards our hearts and minds. If you haven't read the past post, you can go back and read them on our Facebook page, or our website. Let's dive in today's study.
Jehovah-Shalom is composed of Jehovah, meaning "The Existing One" or "Lord," and Shalom, a Hebrew word that encompasses peace, wholeness, and well-being. Together, these words form the name "The Lord Is Peace." This name first appears in the Bible in the story of Gideon, during a time of great fear and turmoil for the Israelites.
We encounter Jehovah-Shalom in Judges 6:24:
"𝘛𝘩𝘦𝘯 𝘎𝘪𝘥𝘦𝘰𝘯 𝘣𝘶𝘪𝘭𝘵 𝘢𝘯 𝘢𝘭𝘵𝘢𝘳 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘳𝘦 𝘵𝘰 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘓𝘰𝘳𝘥 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘤𝘢𝘭𝘭𝘦𝘥 𝘪𝘵, 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘓𝘰𝘳𝘥 𝘐𝘴 𝘗𝘦𝘢𝘤𝘦. 𝘛𝘰 𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘴 𝘥𝘢𝘺 𝘪𝘵 𝘴𝘵𝘪𝘭𝘭 𝘴𝘵𝘢𝘯𝘥𝘴 𝘢𝘵 𝘖𝘱𝘩𝘳𝘢𝘩, 𝘸𝘩𝘪𝘤𝘩 𝘣𝘦𝘭𝘰𝘯𝘨𝘴 𝘵𝘰 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘈𝘣𝘪𝘦𝘻𝘳𝘪𝘵𝘦𝘴." (𝘑𝘶𝘥𝘨𝘦𝘴 6:24, 𝘌𝘚𝘝)
Gideon was called by God to deliver Israel from the oppression of the Midianites. However, he was filled with doubt and fear. After encountering the angel of the Lord, Gideon built an altar and named it Jehovah-Shalom, acknowledging the peace that God brought to him despite his fears and the chaotic circumstances surrounding him.
