Have you ever seen the show Impractical Jokers? It’s about four friends who challenge each other to do some of the most uncomfortable and embarrassing things in public. The catch? If they refuse or fail, they have to go through an even bigger punishment. The result? Lots of laughs as they face their fears or awkward moments.
As fun as the show is, there’s a deeper message we can pull from it about how life often puts us in situations that challenge our faith, character, and courage. Sometimes, God allows us to go through “awkward” or uncomfortable moments, not for punishment, but for growth.

One of the best biblical examples of being thrown into an uncomfortable situation is Peter stepping out of the boat to walk on water with Jesus. Picture it: there’s a storm, the wind is howling, and here’s Peter, trying to walk on water. That had to be terrifying, but it was also a huge test of his faith (Matthew 14:22-33).
For a moment, Peter was doing the impossible—walking on water! But as soon as he took his eyes off Jesus and focused on the storm around him, he began to sink. Jesus reached out, caught him, and asked, “Why did you doubt?”
Just like the guys on Impractical Jokers, Peter was put in a situation that tested him. The difference? Peter’s test wasn’t about laughs but about learning to trust Jesus in scary and uncertain times.

Here’s the takeaway: Life can be awkward, uncomfortable, and downright challenging. We might face trials that test our patience, faith, and trust in God. But those moments aren’t designed to break us; they’re meant to shape us.
The guys on Impractical Jokers always laugh off the awkward situations, and in a way, we can too. James 1:2-4 tells us to “consider it pure joy… whenever you face trials,” because the testing of our faith produces perseverance. Our awkward or difficult moments are opportunities for God to refine us, draw us closer to Him, and build our character.

Romans 5:3-4 reminds us that suffering and trials produce perseverance, character, and hope. When life gets uncomfortable, it’s easy to focus on the storm, like Peter did. But when we keep our eyes on Jesus, those moments become less about the awkwardness and more about growth.
Peter wasn’t punished for sinking. Jesus used that moment to teach Peter a powerful lesson about faith. And in the same way, God can use our uncomfortable or challenging moments to grow us in ways we might not expect.

Next time you find yourself in an “awkward” or challenging situation—whether it’s a conversation, a job struggle, or just the daily stresses of life—remember that God can use that moment to strengthen your faith. Instead of focusing on the storm, fix your eyes on Jesus and trust that He’s working in the middle of it.

• 𝟭 𝗣𝗲𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝟭:𝟲-𝟳 – "In all this you greatly rejoice… though now you may have had to suffer grief in all kinds of trials. These have come so that the proven genuineness of your faith… may result in praise, glory, and honor when Jesus Christ is revealed."
