Jonathan steps forward in faith, believing that God can bring victory whether He has many or few warriors. Without waiting for approval, he and his armor-bearer take action, climbing up to face the Philistines. God honors their faith, sending panic through the enemy camp, leading to a great victory.

Meanwhile, Saul makes a rash oath, forbidding his troops from eating until evening. This weakens them, and when Jonathan unknowingly breaks the oath by eating honey, he immediately sees the foolishness of his father’s command.

God commands Saul to destroy the Amalekites completely, but Saul spares King Agag and keeps the best livestock, claiming he saved them to offer sacrifices. Samuel confronts him, delivering one of the most convicting truths in Scripture:

Saul tries to justify his actions, but Samuel makes it clear—partial obedience is still disobedience. Because of this, God rejects Saul as king. In a dramatic scene, when Saul grabs Samuel’s robe, it tears, symbolizing the tearing away of his kingdom.

Samuel ultimately carries out God’s judgment himself by putting Agag to death. This moment shows that God’s justice cannot be avoided or softened.
