Welcome to part 4 of our FEARLESS study. Today we're in Matthew chapter 14, where we look at the story of when Peter walks on water.
Matthew 14:29-30 (ESV) – “So Peter got out of the boat and walked on the water and came to Jesus. But when he saw the wind, he was afraid, and beginning to sink he cried out, ‘Lord, save me.’”
The disciples are stuck in the middle of a stormy sea, rowing against the wind. It’s dark. They’re exhausted. And then. . . Jesus comes walking on the water. Not rowing. Not swimming. Just casually strolling across the waves like it’s a sidewalk.
Peter, ever the bold one, says, “Lord, if it’s You, tell me to come.”
And Jesus simply says, “Come.”
Peter steps out of the boat and actually walks on water. That is—until the storm distracts him, fear kicks in, and he begins to sink.
Sound familiar?
This moment wasn’t about water-walking skills—it was about eyes fixed on Jesus.
Peter was the only one who stepped out. Eleven stayed dry, but only one experienced the miracle.
Fear didn’t stop him—at first. It was when he shifted focus from Jesus to the storm that he began to sink.
Jesus didn’t let him drown. Even in Peter’s fear, Jesus reached out immediately.
Faith doesn’t mean the storm disappears—it means trusting Jesus in the middle of it.
Fear Factor: When Life Gets Loud
The winds of doubt, fear, and chaos are real. And sometimes you feel like you're going under.
Unexpected news
Financial stress
Family tension
Spiritual burnout
But Jesus is still walking across those waves—inviting you to come to Him.
Reflection Questions:
• What’s the storm in your life right now?
• Are you more focused on the waves or the One walking over them?
• What would it look like to step out of the boat in faith this week?
Fearless Challenge:
Whatever your “boat” is—comfort zone, control, fear of failure—step out. Do the thing that scares you a little but honors Jesus a lot. Keep your eyes on Him, not the storm.
